Weaving Sustainability into the Fabric of Fashion: A Look at the Lifecycle of Garments
Ecehan Aygül Gönül
ABSTRACT:
In a time that is increasingly defined by a need for sustainability and ethical consumer practices, the lifecycle of a garment presents a complex, multifaceted narrative that underscores its profound impacts on our environment, economy, and society. This journey; from raw material extraction to the garment’s end of life, showcases the complex interconnections between the fashion industry and sustainable practices. Specifically, the utilization of materials such as cotton, silk, and polyester highlights distinct environmental footprints and sustainability challenges. Cotton, prized for its natural comfort, often bears a concerning need for water and chemical pesticides. Silk, representing luxury and strength, raises concerns regarding energy consumption and the ethical treatment of silkworms. Polyester, a versatile and durable synthetic, poses issues related to fossil fuel dependency and microplastic pollution. Each material’s journey through design, manufacturing, and consumer use to eventual disposal reveals critical insights into the broader implications of our clothing choices. This exploration into the lifecycle of garments serves not only as an investigation into the tangible impacts of fashion but also as a call to action for the adoption of more sustainable and ethically conscious practices within fashion. By delving into our material culture, this study aims to reevaluate fashion’s long-term impacts on our planet and society, advocating for a future where sustainability and style can coexist harmoniously. Moreover, this inquiry delves into the nuances of our material culture, challenging the prevailing norms and practices that prioritize short-term trends over long-term sustainability.
