Enhance Learning of Presentation Skills Through Interactive Peer Observation, Feedback and Reflection

ABSTRACT:

Communication is one of the graduate attributes for any engineering programmes accredited by bodies under the Washington Accord. However, it is usually taught as an integral part of the programme with limited contact hour. The project intends to improve the effectiveness of learning presentation skills, and to cultivate resilient students who learn through interactive peer observation, peer-to-peer feedback, and self-reflection. After learning about the theories of effective presentation skills in the lecture, students went through an interactive peer observation and feedback session during the tutorial. Students were paired up to do a 5-min impromptu presentation, where the peers observed, and provided quantitative and qualitative feedback to them using the marking rubric provided. Students also wrote a reflective journal on their learning experience. Students were later assessed in a 15-min group presentation, and the same peer observation, peer-to-peer feedback, and self-reflection process were repeated. Observation and data collected show that students improved on presentation skills throughout the learning process, have better understanding on the factors of effective presentations, learned from each other and were able to provide quality feedback to their peers. The reflections showed understanding on the objectives of these learning activities. Besides, students appreciated feedback and accepted it with a positive mindset. The method received 100% agreement from all students as an effective pedagogy to learn presentation skills.
