ABSTRACT:
This study on the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, and Malawi, explores multifaceted dimensions of their lives, encompassing cultural, societal, and legal contexts. The study highlights the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ communities in those countries due to colonial-era laws and discriminatory frameworks. Cultural and societal attitudes contribute to widespread discrimination, safety concerns, and disparities in access to essential services. Kenya’s legal landscape reflects a complex interplay between constitutional promises and colonial-era laws, resulting in clashes between constitutional guarantees and Penal Code provisions criminalizing same-sex acts. In Uganda, the law has introduced an ominous concept of “aggravated homosexuality,” inviting the possibility of capital punishment, forced relocations, and job losses. While transgender individuals in Kenya and Burundi face heightened vulnerability. Malawi experiences familial disintegration and societal rejection due to cultural norms and anti-gay legislation. The LGBTQ+ community in these countries grapples with legal, social, cultural, and security challenges. Recommendations include conducting further research on intersectionality and regional context, legal reforms and advocacy, education and awareness programs, healthcare access and support for LGBTQ+ individuals, and international collaboration and diplomacy. Research should further explore the experiences of transgender individuals, bisexual individuals, and other marginalized groups within the LGBTQ+ community. The study advocates for a holistic approach, integrating legal reforms, education initiatives, healthcare accessibility, and international collaboration to cultivate a more equitable society and advance LGBTQ+ rights in the region.
