Mythologizing Asian Masculinities: A Critical Analysis of Homoerotic Instagram Imagery
Joseph Black
ABSTRACT:
This paper delves into the complex dynamics surrounding the representation of Asian masculinity in homoerotic imagery proliferating on Instagram. Through a critical examination of such images, this study unveils a dichotomy wherein Asian men are simultaneously mythologized as effeminate and subordinate to white men, while also being portrayed as rugged, virile, and masculine figures. This juxtaposition gives rise to a battle of myths, highlighting how these constructed narratives are utilized and consumed within broader social contexts. Central to this exploration is the notion of racial power dynamics, wherein white male desire for and mythologization of effeminate Asian male bottoms is juxtaposed with the portrayal of muscular Asian men as assertive tops, thereby challenging conventional power hierarchies. By analyzing the imagery and its reception, this paper elucidates the multifaceted nature of Asian sexualities and how platforms like Instagram serve as conduits for their visibility and promotion. Ultimately, this study underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of Asian masculinities, moving beyond simplistic tropes to recognize the diversity and agency within Asian communities. Through a critical lens, it sheds light on the ways in which digital spaces both perpetuate and subvert prevailing myths, offering insights into the ongoing negotiation of identity and desire in contemporary society.
