ABSTRACT:

This research study examines the impact of social support networks on Men who have sex with men (MSM) in South Africa, with a specific emphasis on alleviating the adverse consequences of socioeconomic determinants of health. Individuals who identify as MSM encounter instances of discrimination, social stigma, and barriers in accessing healthcare services, which in turn contribute to negative health consequences. This research used a mixed-methods methodology, including qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys, to investigate the role of social support in facilitating improved health outcomes. The results indicate that robust social support networks have a significant role in increasing the physical and mental well-being of MSM. These networks contribute to the development of resilience, self-esteem, and adherence to healthcare practices, while simultaneously lowering engagement in hazardous behaviors. Recognizing and enhancing these support structures has the potential to enhance the efficacy of public health interventions and effectively tackle the health issues encountered by MSM in South Africa.
