ABSTRACT:

This internship was carried out at SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK INITIATIVES ENTERPRISE (SALI Ets.) for a period of one month from the 28th of February to the 28th of March 2023. SALI enterprise is a legalized enterprise, registered under the ministry of small and medium size enterprise. It offers internship opportunities to students in need of education on maggot production, poultry production, fish production and oil production. This internship has helped me as a trainee to acquaint myself with rural activities like Agriculture and livestock rearing, the purpose of this project is to fulfill the requirement for the award of a higher national diploma (HND) in agro pastoral adviser (APA). The main purpose of this project is to reduce the cost of feed by using poultry droppings to produce maggots base feed which can be used to feed poultry in order to reduce the cost of protein in feed maggot will therefore replace fishmeal which is an expensive feed ingredients in poultry feed. Maggot feed on waste, thus cleaning up the environment, converting waste to protein and good quality fertilizers. 1kg of maggot meal is reported 20% cheaper to harvest than 1kg of fishmeal. Insect are also resources of vitamins, minerals and energy due to the high fat contents, maggot meal is reported to have comparable protein content of 37.5-59% ( depending on the substrate) and quality ( in terms of limiting amino acid, methionine and lysine ) to that silver fish.
In conclusion, this was an opportunity to develop skills and competencies in my field of studies which I finally achieved at the end of the internship
