ABSTRACT:

Background: Simulation is commonly used in nursing education as a way to teach basic clinical skills, supplementary to clinical experience. Simulation helps to reduce performance anxiety, increase self-confidence in psychomotor skills and improve critical thinking. Using video demonstration of the clinical skill alongside traditional simulation, can bridge the gap between theory and practical performance, and provide the opportunity for continuous learning. The aim of this study was to evaluate students’ experiences of the use of video demonstrations alongside theory and simulation training during fundamental course.
Summary of Work: Seventy-five first year nursing students participated in a Fundamental of Nursing course, during which they learn basic clinical skills through lectures, video demonstration and simulation training. Following the course, participants completed an electronic survey to evaluate the course. Students rated the extent to which the video demonstrations contributed to their self-confidence and preparedness for performing the clinical skills. In addition, students were allowed to write their own comments regarding the course activities.
Summary of Results: Most students believed that the video demonstrations increased their self-confidence (80%) and their preparedness for performing the clinical skills (79%). In their comments, they say that the video demonstrations contributed to their understanding of the theoretical materials, improved preparedness before actual practice, save time during the practice, enable rewatching.
Discussion and Conclusion: Based on the information provided, the use of videos in education has several advantages, including the creation of standard of teaching, the reduction of bias, the saving of resources such as time, classrooms, and teacher resources, and the ability for students to re-watch videos for improved learning. The feedback from students supports these benefits, indicating that video-based education optimizes the learning process.
