Ottoman-Turkish Modernization and Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu

ABSTRACT:
Ottoman-Turkish modernization begins in the 18th century. The main goal of Ottoman-Turkish modernization (at least initially) to ensure the survival of the Ottoman Empire. Westernization movement begin with the Period of Selim III and Mahmud II and continues with the Republic of Turkey. The first developments took place in the military. On 1839, The Tanzimat Edict was a turning point in the history of Ottoman-Turkish modernization. The biggest innovation brought by Tanzimat was the restriction of the sultan’s power. The Tanzimat period also had an impact on Ottoman social and cultural life. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of Türkiye is established.
Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu was born in 1889 and he experienced the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. He is a Turkish writer and diplomat. He has an important role in Turkish politics and he is a significant writer in Turkish literature. He is one of the founders of the Turkish Language Association. Especially his novels contain information about Turkish Modernization. The aim of this study is to examine the author’s novels and to reveal his ideas about Turkish modernization.
