Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly used by the population and also in academia, and can promote different impacts in the field. AI is a mechanism that aims to match the human learning capacity, being able to predict responses through learning algorithms: Machine Learning. Just as humans are proposing to connect more with these tools, medical science is also moving in the same direction. In this regard, it is relevant to discuss alternatives that consider and experiment with such use and avoid, above all, errors. Thus, this research aims to present a case study of the use of AI algorithms in the area of medical education, report projects already carried out and present impacts of the proposed tool. This case study focuses on teaching Medical Informatics to 180 students in the first period of the medical course using hospital databases and algorithms. As results, 20 publications were obtained in international conferences, more than 180 students, freshmen with impact publications (in A1 qualis journals, or impact factor greater than 2). With experience in the practice of data analysis and management using innovative tools within AI medical education, in addition to an experience of differentiated scientific production by students in the first semester. Despite the success of the experiments, such as AUCs of 0.98 and publications, relevant issues such as hard skills assessments have become pertinent in order to evaluate educational gains. The use of AI as a learning and scientific production mechanism within medicine offers different academic and professional benefits. Therefore, more projects like those reported should be encouraged in the medical field.
