ABSTRACT:
The introduction of Practical Research courses in senior high school highlights the status of research in Philippine basic education and poses critical challenges for education stakeholders. As a proactive response, De La Salle University Integrated School (DLSU IS) has implemented a Research Advising and Mentoring Program (RAMP) in senior high school. Since research advising programs are not usually part of basic education system, this research project documents and describes DLSU IS’s RAMP through the perspectives of its main stakeholders. The researchers conducted focus-group discussions with the research mentees, research advisers, and research administrators. From the thematic categorization, the following program features were identified: 1) Efficient system and effective guidelines, 2) Careful matching of topic interest and field of expertise, 3) Regular consultations, 4) Functional facilities and platforms, 5) Sufficient financial support, 6) Strategic exposure to research opportunities, 7) Reflective research process, and 8) Constant program evaluation. The findings of this study suggest that the success of the program can be attributed to the identified Eight Features of a Sustainable Research Advising and Mentoring Program. Furthermore, these features can be a benchmark for other Philippine senior high schools in developing their own sustainable research advising programs that prepare basic education students for a research-oriented university life.
