Knowledge And Attitude Towards Assessment and Testing Among School and Other Practicing Counsellors in Nigeria

ABSTRACT: 

The study examines knowledge and attitude towards assessment and testing among school and other practicing counsellors in Nigeria. Four research questions and four hypotheses were formulated for the study. The population of the study consisted of all counsellors in Nigeria. The sample of the study consists of three hundred and fifty counsellors selected through multi-stage stratified random sampling. The sample of the study was selected during the annual conference of the Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria (APROCON) and Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON). The data for the study were collected using and instrument titled “Knowledge and Attitude towards Assessment and Testing among School and other Practicing Counsellors in Nigeria Scale (KAATSOPCNS)” designed by the researcher after exhaustive literature review. The data for the study were collected by the researcher and six research assistants. The data collected were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMCC). The study found among others that there was significant relationship between knowledge and attitude towards assessment among school counsellors in Nigeria; the study also found that there was significant relationship between knowledge and attitude towards testing among practicing counsellors in Nigeria. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made; School and other practicing counsellors should obtain the required qualifications and prerequisite experience to understand the nitty-gritty of assessment and testing before practicing as counsellors; it was also recommended that school and other practicing counsellors should attend counselling conferences and other enabling trainings in other to be well abreast with assessment and testing in counselling.
