ABSTRACT:

Students all over the country, especially adolescents, have felt psychologically vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, there exist no fixed measures to test the anxiety induced by online classes among college students in India. The purpose of the present study was to identify the said measures and the gaps in the online learning process that prevent it from becoming a viable alternative to traditional education. The researchers administered a questionnaire comprised of three facets, psychological, environmental, and technical to the engineering undergraduate students (n=200) of IIIT-NR, India. Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) score was also taken from the participants and assessed further. The study showed that online classes during the pandemic led to the rise of mental disorders, including social anxiety, panic attacks, severe anxiety, and chronic depression. Financial stability, fewer family members, urban living, stable internet connectivity, and a robust support ecosystem were some factors that led to enhanced mental health in college students.
