Self-Directed Learning Readiness and the Academic Achievement among Practicum Engineering Students
Dr. Lina S. Calucag, Dr. Beda T. Aleta
ABSTRACT:
The current study sought to ascertain the relationship between self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) and the academic achievements of mechatronics engineering students of the University of Technology Bahrain prior to their practicum training. This is a descriptive correlational research involving 115 mechatronics engineering students officially enrolled the practicum course from 3rd trimester, SY2021-2022 through 1st and 2nd trimesters, SY2022-2023. The level of SDLR before taking the practicum course was measured using the adapted questionnaire of Guglielmino with three subscales: self-management (SM), determination to learn (DL) and self-control (SC); and students’ academic achievement by their cumulative grade point average. Results showed that, SM and High CGPA were found to be strongly positively correlated, r(24)=.81, p=.000 while DL vs High CGPA and SC vs High CGPA were found to be moderately positively correlated with r=.67, p=.00 and r=.53, p=.009, respectively. For students with average (middle) CGPA, results showed that, SM and CGPA were found to be moderately positively correlated, r(82)=.61, p=.000 while DL vs CGPA and SC vs CGPA were found to be strongly positively correlated with r=.87, p=.000 and r=.85, p=.000, respectively. On the other hand, students with low CGPA, results showed that, SM and low CGPA were found to be weak positively correlated, r(9)=.30, p=.433 while DL vs low CGPA and SC vs CGPA were found to be weak negatively correlated with r= -.39, p=.299; and r= -.34, p=.371, respectively. In addition, self-control appears highly determined by determination to learn.
