Path to Social Justice in Developing Countries Through Quality Education: Application of Sen’s Capability Approach
Martha Matashu
ABSTRACT:
The prosperity of humanity lies in the unlocking of productivity and capabilities in people. The continued misgivings of high inequalities, poverty, and several ills in developing countries raise scepticism about the realities of societies achieving equalities in functioning and capabilities through education to the end of attaining social justice. These material facts beg the submission of the argument that, without doubt the altitude of the observed social -economic challenges provide compelling evidence that, the need to address social justice has not only long crossed the Rubicon but also indicate beyond reasonable doubt the need for new theoretical and conceptual approaches to enact social justice. This study thus reasoned that it is imperative to explore the application of the capability approach developed by Amartya Sen to conceptualise the role of education in promoting social justice in developing countries. The conclusive findings of the study proposed a people, production, and prosperity conceptual framework for promoting social justice in developing countries. Through the proposed framework this study concluded that the prosperity of humanity is enriched through capability and human capital driven approaches that engenders equalities and human development. The study recommends that developing countries through the capability approach should focus on developing conditions that enable education to unlock capabilities and human development of people to the end of enacting social justice.
