The Historical Context of the Beginning of the 20th Century and the Spread of Demoticism in Greece

Dr. Stella Chantzi

ABSTRACT:

The paper refers to the Political & Social reality in Greece in the early 20th century in connection with the creation of the demoticiste movement in Greece. At the beginning of the 20th century, educated Greeks raised questions about Greek culture as well as the Greek language. Language is projected as a means of reforming the nation and a reflection of the bigotry of the time. The historical events are varied and among them the bourgeoisie prevails led by E. Venizelos, while in the intellectual space two main opposing tendencies collide: the modernist and the traditional, with the spearhead of language creating the language issue. At this juncture, the demoticiste movement is taking shape, aiming at linguistic renaissance as a precondition for the wider national renaissance. Demoticism functions as a place where new fields of thought and action are cultivated. With the passage of time, it grows stronger and stronger and is formed into a collective movement, with a Greek character, renewal and a combination of various motley conservative and revolutionary forces of modern Greek thought and with a starting point the national problem.
