ABSTRACT:

The importance of self-awareness is pivotal to how we as individuals go about our daily lives – both as members of society and as a part of organizations. The way in which we lead, depends on the person we are. Studies into the linkage between self-awareness and leadership have not been given as much of the spotlight over the years.  The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between effective leadership and self-awareness among managers in South Africa. This was a cross-sectional quantitative study conducted among 115 managers from a mortgage-financing institution in South Africa. Data were collected using online platform and anonymous questionnaire was used. Results showed that majority of the managers had effective leadership criteria and they had good self-awareness. Correlation analysis found no significant relationship between effective leadership and self-awareness. Self-awareness tests should be utilized at a recruitment level and the importance of it should be driven throughout the organization.
