Omodewu Oluwatosin Omosolape
ABSTRACT:
Second language acquisition (SLA) or L2 (Language 2) acquisition is the process by which people learn a second language, it is also a scientific field devoted to the studying of that process. The problems of second language acquisition cannot be over-emphasized.This paper attempts to examine the problems and solutions of the teaching, learning, and the acquisition of English language in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions. The study will discuss the following: Second language acquisition, importance of English language, English as a second language, the relationship between the teacher and learner in tertiary institutions, the problems in the acquisition of English language as a second language in tertiary Institutions and lastly the possible solutions to the problems in the form of recommendation. We posit that English language is a second language to Nigeria, a globally accepted language which must be used effectively by students of tertiary institutions as they prepare for the future ahead of them. The onus lies here in the joint effort of both the teacher who is known as a lecturer in the tertiary institution known as the sender of the information and the student who is the receiver of the information.
