ABSTRACT:
Scientific research on oncological diseases represents an advance for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, given that cancer is one of the main causes of premature death and disability worldwide. The incidence of oncological diseases has aspects specific to each sex, which is why a differentiated analysis is required to evaluate the trends of each tumour according to sex, but also according to gender. Gender biases in research impede early detection of cancer. The objective of this study is to analyse if the gender perspective is considered in scientific works on oncology. The scientific articles to be analysed were obtained by random sampling among the documents of thematic category of oncology retrieved in a bibliographic search in the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection Science Citation Index Expanded signed by at least one professional from Spanish institutions and published in the period 2010-2019. The number of articles analysed were 75. The “Checklist for gender research” (European Commission, 2014) and the “Simple checklist for sex-sensitive and gender-sensitive research” (Thompson et al, 2019) were used for the analysis of the gender perspective in the content of the article. The results demonstrate that the insertion of the sex variable is widespread, however, the introduction of the gender perspective and the analysis of the impact of the disease on women and men is still scarce. The study shows the need to advance in the inclusion of the gender perspective in cancer research to overcome gender bias and promote better prevention, detection, and intervention of cancer diseases.
